In 2021, Sonoco found themselves needing to ship a high number of containers of urgently needed temperature-sensitive medical supplies in a very tight period. To ensure success in a challenging market, Sonoco turned to its long-time transportation partner Covenant.

The stakes were high. For the past several years, and especially in 2021, the transportation market had been riddled with significant challenges that impacted worker, driver and equipment availability, as well as cargo velocity. As many will recall, 2021 marked the tightest truckload capacity ever in history at that time. Recognizing the critical nature of the shipments, however, Covenant immediately rose to the challenge.

“Covenant stepped up, positioned over sixty trailers at numerous locations, and managed the shipments day-to-day, smoothly, and without disruption. Their dedication to our operations ensured the success of Sonoco’s commitments to our customers,” Sonoco said in a statement.

To make this possible, Covenant developed a regional dedicated fleet that consisted of eighty drivers and tractors. This was in addition to the dedicated day-to-day operations already being ran for Sonoco.

“Their ability to flex up and develop this fleet ensured we maintained operational excellence and continued to move product to our customers,” Sonoco continued. “Amidst the capacity issues, driver shortages, out-of-balance networks and equipment shortages, Sonoco continued to grow and was awarded new programs. Covenant is well deserving of this Operational Excellence Award. Thank you, Covenant, for your commitment to our operational excellence.”
